Les « marchés sans intermédiaires » sont initialement apparus en 2012 à l’initiative de collectifs de la société civile, en pleine crise économique, suite au mouvement dit « de la pomme de terre ». Depuis lors, ils se propagent rapidement dans toute la Grèce, en même temps que d’autres initiatives alimentaires, telles que les jardins urbains associatifs, les premiers paniers de type AMAP et les épiceries sociales qui s’inscrivent dans le cadre d’une économie sociale et solidaire émergente. Le mouvement « sans intermédiaires » représente une réponse collective par le bas au marché capitaliste dominant.
